You know... when I first took a look at Final Fantasy XII's gameplay, I couldn't help but feel that you're playing an MMORPG... only with androgenous-looking characters. But hey, it's Final Fantasy, so what would you expect? I thought it was a nice way to evolve the series... it was about time they got rid of that archaic ping-pong fest! You still need to open a menu in order to do a normal attack, but it's still a step in the right direction.
Still, there's one thing they did, which ended up ruining everything... When I said this reminded me of an MMORPG, I didn't mean the overall system only... but also for the fact that Square had the "bright" idea of implementing the almighty "Gambit system". Lemme try to sum up what's it for:
With that system, you can configure behaviours for your characters so they can keep on fighting on their own, and you don't really have to do a thing. You can go have some coffee with your friends, read the newspaper, go play a better videogame (sorry, I couldn't resist throwing that one in XD), and the characters will STILL be alive and kickin' some boss ass. Kinda like botting in MMOs, unless here it's perfectly legal, as well as encouraged by the game itself. The point of it is to get the perfect combination of commands, so you don't have to do jack shit throughout the entire freakin' thing.
So, let's get this straight... Now that Square FINALY is putting some dynamism on Final Fantasy's combat gameplay... they simply ruin it by adding an auto-pilot feature? I'm not against having party A.I. for your party members, or anything, but when the player doesn't really need to do much (if anything at all), I think the term "gameplay" goes down the drain.
True, you don't exactly NEED to use it, since you can assign commands for your characters 100% manually... but if you ever fought guys like Yazmat, then you PERFECTLY know how tempting that gambit crap can be. Really, 50112254 HP?!
WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN SMOKING, SQUARE?!.. the same shit they've been smoking all the time, that much I can tell...
